The Edo State Police Command arrested a woman (the mother of the child) and a nurse for allegedly conspiring to sell the woman’s baby. The transaction was finalized for the sum of N1.4 million.

The police intercepted the suspects following intelligence or a tip-off regarding the illegal transaction. The operation led to the recovery of the baby, who has since been handed over to the appropriate authorities or welfare services for care

She claimed that she decided to sell the baby due to financial hardship and the inability to cater for the child’s needs. In some variations of this story, the mother stated she needed funds to start a business or settle debts

The nurse acted as the intermediary or agent who linked the mother with a prospective buyer. The nurse likely received a portion of the N1.4 million as a “commission” or finder’s fee for facilitating the sale.

The Edo State Commissioner of Police paraded the suspects alongside other criminals. The police command reiterated its commitment to cracking down on human trafficking and child rights violations in the state. They warned residents against engaging in such heinous acts, noting that the law would catch up with perpetrators. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of child trafficking and “baby factories” in parts of Nigeria, where economic hardship drives some parents to sell their children.
